Publishing your site, and keeping it private
The difference between saving, publishing and being visible — and how to preview privately.
Three separate things, often confused:

| Saved | Your draft is stored. Nothing public has changed. |
| Published | A build has run and deployed your draft to the live site. |
| Visible | Whether the public is allowed to see it at all. |
New sites start private
Visitors to a private site get a "coming soon" page, and search engines are told not to index it. That is the default for every new site, so nothing goes public by accident while you are still working.
Previewing before you go public
You can generate a private preview link that lets you — and anyone you send it to — see the real site while it is still private. While previewing, a small admin bar appears with links back to the editor and your dashboard.
Publishing takes a moment
Publishing queues a build that renders your site and pushes it to the edge. Queuing is not the same as being live — your site is marked published once a build has actually deployed. If a rebuild fails and you were already live, your last good version keeps serving.
